My last blog on Zend_Form post sparked a fire for wanting to do tutorials. So while I’m preparing my next post (which I’m not sure what it will be), I decided to do a real quick one on creating a simple page controller in Zend Framework.
For quite a number of my ZF projects in the last year, I’ve found that a full-blown CMS to manage content pages is overkill: Either it’s staffed by all developers or the client makes so little changes to copy that it’s a waste of time and money to develop (or implement) an entire system to manage them. Today had quite a number of Zend_Form-related questions in #zftalk. Everything from Decorators to Composite Elements, you know — the usual Zend_Form questions. What better way to answering questions than with a blog post and some sample code?
I’ve posted everything to my GitHub (with a decent amount of inline comments) if you’d like to see the results there. Continue reading →
While I was riding my bike today, I came up with a great plot for a B-Movie. I hope you’re ready, because I’m about to blow your mind with the worst idea ever.
The title would be something like The Gamer and would star a kid that got struck by lightning or something while playing his Xbox 360. But wait for the twist: the video game he bought actually contains secret plans for a nuclear missile or something, so the Russian mob is after him [or CIA: this detail is irrelevant to my idea]. Turns out he gained gaming-related supernatural powers, so after he was killed by the bad guys, he respawns and gets chaotic retribution with unrealistic explosions everywhere. Starring Shia LaBeouf. There needs to be a love interest in this as well, maybe the crime lord’s daughter. I don’t know, something cliche and terrible is definitely necessary.
I think I have found my new calling: I could probably make a mediocre living coming up with terrible movie ideas and even worse tag lines to go with them.
I’m also open to a female actress for the lead role, but I was unable to think of a believable actress. Let’s face it: Hollywood would only be able to supply a lead role with decent looks, and the geeks out there wouldn’t get behind a movie without the premise of the mythical hot girl gamer. Hot gamer girls obviously exist, but they are a minority in an ocean of the girl gamer minority. So, clearly, the chances of being a hot girl gamer and also being struck by lightning thereby granting you supernatural powers then being hunted by powerful bad guys is frankly too unbelievable.
Also: I’m sorry if you subscribe to my blog and expect intelligent things from me.

This year I’ve been trying to ruffle up my development and bring in new perspective. I think it’s a pretty healthy thing to do as a programmer to shake things up, so I’ve adopted a, “It’s at least worth giving it a shot,” mindset. Continue reading →
I’ve lately been spending my free development time working on integrating Doctrine 2 and Zend Framework together using the standard ZF directory structure. This past week I stumbled upon LoSo on Github and started tinkering. I’m happy to say that the library works very well.
I’ve been working on moving one of my applications over that was using Zend_Db and couldn’t be happier with how easy it has been ramping up. If you’re looking to get Doctrine2 into a modular (or not) Zend Framework application, I would definitely recommend taking a look, but be willing to spend some time digging into the code — there isn’t much documentation yet (the Github wiki has some, as does the project home page).
This year has been a year of firsts for me for many reasons, but the most surprising one to me is that I’ve donated to charities for the first time in my life. Two of them, actually. After shoveling my money to paying back student loans, I don’t have a lot left, but it’s so addicting. It felt really good the first time and the second time around felt just as golden.
Who knows, maybe it’ll become a habit.
Last night I decided it would be a good idea to finally start putting some of my Zend Framework library into a public repository for consumption by whoever feels like it.
It’s going to be a slow migration process as I figure out the portions which I think will be beneficial to other people.
Head on over to my GitHub account to check it out.
I’ve been meaning to get my own personal blog for a few months now. Now that I have something, I’m going to procrastinate content until I have something worthwhile to say by playing video games.
